05/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a press release on Tuesday, the Church Commission and the Society of the Conference of European Churches stressed the impact Turkey's accession to the EU would have, warning: "The risk of taking this substantial political decision without sufficient support from the Union's citizens may lead to increasing the distance between the EU and its citizens". "For the European churches the accession of Turkey to the EU is not a question of religious differences", notes the statement, pointing out that the EU is also a community of values, and currently not all of the same values are expressed in Turkey. The statement refers to the situation of the Armenian minority and of Christian minorities in Turkey.
