Brussels, 23/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided not to oppose the creation of a joint venture between Japanese companies Seiko Epson and Sanyo which will produce small Liquid Crystal Display panels used in mobile phones and small portable computers. Although the agreement will create one of the world leading suppliers of such screens, the joint venture will face competition from other worldwide players, argues the Commission, such as Sharp, Samsung SDI, TMD, Philips, and others, which will guarantee competition in Europe. On markets where the new company will hold leading market positions, there are minimal overlaps and LCD panels are procured in relatively large volumes through bidding procedures by blue chip purchasers like Nokia, Motorola, Sony, Philips and Samsung.
