President Barroso says that certain new Member States should be able to use tax competition

Brussels, 22/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with Le Monde of 21 September, the President designate of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, having been asked about the idea of French Finance Minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, to take Community aid away from Member States which "lower their tax to attract business", replied that "nobody has made any official request" to this end.
