Commission to release another EUR 3 million for Haiti and Grenada

Brussels, 22/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is to release another EUR 3 million in emergency humanitarian aid for victims of the cyclones that hit the Caribbean (EUR 1.5 million had already been allocated).

The above amount, taken from the ECHO (European Community Humanitarian Office) budget, will go to victims of hurricane "Ivan" that hit Grenada. The other half is intended for victims of "Jane" which devastated Haiti. Aid administered by the ECHO partners on the ground (Red Cross, United Nations agencies and NGOs) will provide shelter, food, hygiene kits, material for repairing roofs, drinking water supplies, and emergency communication services.

The ECHO mission for assessing needs is still underway in Haiti as well as in Grenada.
