EP urges EU to cease non-humanitarian aid to Maldives until human rights are restored

Strasbourg, 17/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - On the initiative of British Conservative MEP Niji Deva, the European Parliament on Thursday adopted a resolution (following the emergency debates) drafted by a series of political groups, urging President Gayoom to immediately lift the state of emergency in the Maldives, and to guarantee respect of human rights and a release of pro-democracy reformers arrested on 14 August.
