THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/olympic games/security

05/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Greek press agency ANA took stock, on Wednesday, of the security provisions in place to ensure that the Olympic Games unfold in a secure environment between 13 to 29 August in Athens (the measures will be extended until the end of the Paralympic Games on 28 September). The prevention network set in place by the Greek armed forces provides for the use of 234 aircraft and helicopters, 51 vessels from the Greek navy and 28 anti-aircraft missile batteries, as well as the presence of armed forces staff involving 53,363 people, ANA states. The Greek agency specifies that the nuclear, biological and chemical defence units have been set in place and that the security network will be supported, at Greece's request, by NATO's Permanent Mediterranean Naval Force that will patrol outside territorial waters. Also, a plan called "Valkanio" will ensure the protection of land borders with 200 check points. (For details on security measures planned for the OG of Athens, see also our bulletin Atlantic News of 23 July).
