05/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - The new centre-left Czech government under Stanislav Gross (CSSD) has been in place since Wednesday. The European Union's youngest head of government (34 years of age) has not greatly changed the previous cabinet headed by his predecessor, Vladimir Spidla, who resigned after his party lost in the European elections on 13 June (and who is to become European Commissioner). The majority, composed of the Social-Democrat Party (CSSD), Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and the Liberal Party (US-DEU), remains unchanged. Furthermore, two thirds of the outgoing team is back including, among others, Foreign Minister Cyril Swoboda and Finance Minister Bohuslav Sobotka. The only surprise nomination is that of the Minister for the Economy, Martin Jahn, Director of the agency for investment promotion, CzechInvest. Despite the fragility of the coalition (101 seats out of 200) and the CSSD's internal squabbling, Stanislav Gross stated in a press release that he wishes to "create a team that works well (…) in order to create greater confidence in the future".
