EU partially lifts embargo on arms to Iraq

Brussels, 23/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - Monday's Justice and Home Affairs Council adopted without debate its common position 2004/553/CFSP on Iraq in order to come into line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1546. In its resolution, the Security Council welcomes the setting in place of the new Iraqi government, on 29 June, and foresees exemptions to the ban on sales of arms and related material imposed against Iraq since 1990. The new Council common position, which amends the common position 2003/495/CFSP, authorises the sale, supply, transfer and exportation of arms and related material to the new Iraqi government, or the multinational force established by UN Resolution 1511 in order to allow it to implement the United Nations 1546 resolution. This common position, which took effect the day when it was adopted, was published in the Official Journal L246 of 20 July.
