Brussels, 23/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - Summer is at its height and the favourite tourist destinations in Europe are full of holidaymakers. But what is the consumer rights situation when the holiday for which they have taken out a contract does not live up to expectations? When, for example, the tour operator goes bankrupt and is no longer able to reimburse the reserved holiday? In order to help European tourists know what their rights are, Commissioners David Byrne, responsible for health and consumer protection, and Pavel Telicka have published an information brochure which, entitled "Consumer Protection in the European Union: 10 Basic Principles", outlines the key ways in which EU law protects consumers' rights whether holidays are spent at the Belgian coast or on the Mediterranean Riviera. "Our message to citizens is enjoy your holidays - and enjoy your rights. This demonstrates the real value that Europe brings to its citizens", Mr Telicka commented. David Byrne stressed for his part that the holidays will be all the more beneficial to citizens if they know what protection they can enjoy in the 25 Member States. "This is yet an other tangible benefit of enlargement and it shows Europe at the service of its people", he commented. The brochure is available at: http: //europa.eu.int/comm/consumers/index_en.htm.
