Brussels, 23/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Greens/EFA group has written to the future President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durao Barroso, and to the new President of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell, to ask them to intervene in the genetically modified organisms (GMO) dossier. They feel that decisions made are not sufficiently democratic. In the absence of qualified majority in the Council of Agriculture Ministers of the Member States of the EU and under the comitology rules, the Commission authorised the import of corn NK 603 on Monday (see EUROPE of 20 July, p.9). Describing the absence of majority as significant, the Greens/EFA said that this procedure is "incompatible with the democratic notions promoted by the Union". The alliance of ecologists and regionalists also points out that 70% of European citizens are opposed to all forms of genetically modified foodstuffs.
