Brussels, 16.07.2004 (Agence Europe) - European Union representatives with the United Nations have said they are pleased with the draft Palestinian resolution calling on Israel to respect the ruling of the International Criminal Court by destroying its “security fence” , the subject of scrutiny on Friday by the United Nations General Assembly meeting in extraordinary session. “Europeans have put forward a whole series of suggestions, with changes to sweeten” the text presented by the permanent representative of the Palestinian Authority with the UN, Nasser al Kidoua, EUROPE was told on Friday by Cristina Gallach, spokesperson for the EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana. The aim is to make the text “more acceptable” to allow a “collective European Union vote” on the draft resolution, Ms Gallach continued, adding that discussions are ongoing among representatives of the European Union with the United Nations. While the United States stated their opposition to the proposed resolution on Tuesday, the Palestinian representative and several Arab diplomats had numerous meetings with officials of the Dutch Presidency to seek reassurance that the 25 EU Member States will give their support during the vote of the General Assembly on the draft resolution, Reuters reports. The vote will probably not be held until next week.
