2004 cereal production looking promising

Brussels, 05/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - According to estimations by the Commission of Agricultural Organisations in the Europe (Copa) and the General Confederation of Agricultural Co-operatives in the European Union (Cogeca), the 2004 cereals harvest in the EU is looking promising. In a press release published on Monday, the agricultural organisations announced a 2% increase on last year of surface areas, to 52.3 million hectares, and a 15% increase in, production, to 272 million tonnes in the enlarged Europe. Copa and Cogeca feel that the volume of the harvest in the EU should help to replenish cereal stocks. They also call upon the Commission to: -manage the market better, making it possible to export under good conditions from the beginning of the marketing year; -actively pursue the release of rye stocks still in intervention; -and bear in mind the risk of sizeable low-cost imports of cereals from the Black Sea (Ukraine and Russia).
