Luxembourg, 11/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - The 25 Transport Ministers of the European Union, meeting in Luxembourg on Friday, refused for now to conclude an air transport agreement with the United States. Having held a long discussion on this issue at the lunch attended by the Commissioner for Transport, Loyola de Palacio, Ministers said that the latest American proposals were largely insufficient to guarantee satisfactory access to the American market for European airlines (EUROPE of 10 June, p.11). Telling the press that "the current situation is unacceptable", Ms de Palacio said that she would do all in her power to try to conclude on agreement ahead of the EU/US Summit on 26 June, or later if needs be. "We will try to increase access to the American market for European airlines, or we will achieve the balance by freezing the rights of American airlines over the European market", she said.
