10/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - The G8 Sea Island Summit has adopted a new action plan to improve transport safety against the significant terrorist threat in the world. On Wednesday, the USA, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy and Russia approved an initiative for the SAFTI (safe and simple initiative for transport), which will also apply for travellers and world trade. While the plan stresses the need for cooperation in fighting the terrorist threat, also recognises the need to respect sovereign rights of countries, national legislation and international obligations on the respect for private life (the problem also raised by the European Parliament about the EU/US agreement on data on passengers on transatlantic flights: EUROPE 2 June p 14 on the signing of the agreement and 3 June p 16 on the convocation of a legal committee at the European Parliament on 16 June to check the agreement's compatibility with European legislation on data protection and possibly begin proceedings at the EU Court of Justice).
