Brussels, 26/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - A new European Constitution Intergroup will be set up during the constitutive session of the European Parliament at the end of the June elections (20-22 July in Strasbourg), announced Jo Leinen, Alain Lamassoure, Andrew Duff, Monica Frassoni and Michael Papyannakis.
The Intergroup is also requesting that Article 26 of the draft constitution be used in choosing the new European Commission president (to take into account the results of the European elections). Some MEPs are also proposing that on this occasion the European Council and the European Parliament hold parallel sessions. They consider that the European Council should have consultations on the candidate to succeed Romano Prodi during the plenary in July and that Parliament holds a debate afterwards before voting.
