Germany expected to open post sorting sector to competition

Brussels, 26/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - Germany will have to amend its legislation in order to introduce more competition in the postal preparation market, warned the Commission. Sorting activities are part of postal upstream services, which send the post out to Deutsche Post once it is sorted. Commissioner Monti's spokesperson Tilman Lüder indicated that these companies were unhappy that they were obliged to operate in a single municipality. He explained that they considered that these third party companies should be able to sort post in other areas and that these activities should be opened up to competition. Lüder gave an example of a similar case in France in 2001 where the Commission had decided that the activities of postal sorting activities should not be part of La Poste française' monopoly and should be opened to competition. The spokesperson added that Deutsche Post should not be the only company allowed to sort post in different districts. The Commission has sent a warning letter to Germany asking it to take necessary measures. Berlin has promised that it will amend its legislation
