Strasbourg, 26/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of a resolution on Nigeria, the European Parliament condemns all forms of religious intolerance and violence, including the very recent large-scale massacre of Christians and destruction of churches in the Plateau State, Nigeria. It calls on the Nigerian government to put an end to the violence, to energetically tackle the issue of human rights and notably religious freedom, and to promote dialogue that will bring peace and lasting security in all States. It deplores the fact that the poliomyelitis vaccination programme has been suspended upon a decision by the authorities of the Kano region following unfounded rumours about the vaccination launched by a number of Islamic preachers, a decision that seriously endangers any progress in eradicating polio in Africa. The recent explosion of violence in the Federate Plateau State caused the death of around 1,500 Christians, the displacement of nearly 50,000 persons and the destruction of 173 churches.
