23/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - Claudio Fava, elected member of Democratici di sinistra, states in a press release his regret that the Parliament had confirmed that the bridge over the Messina Strait would be included in the priority projects for the European transport network. He noted, however, that, during the vote, 181 MEPs from fifteen countries confirmed their great reserve with regard the project (yesterday's EUROPE, p.11). At any rate, it is clear that "Europe will not take part in financing the work: The EIB has already made it known that it will not pay out a single centime for the bridge without indepth verification of the environmental impact and the economic sustainability that are requested", the Italian member of the Socialist Group notes. In Italy, Corriere della Sera says, the Italian Minister for Transport, Pietro Lunardi, welcomed the vote by Parliament, saying that the project is the "sign a frame of mind is returning, that of the major builders". "I like to refer to the Roman Empire, to Trajan and to Hadrien", Mr Lunardi said.
