Ep approves second railway package

Brussels, 23/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - As expected the European Parliament adopted without any problem the agreement on the second railway package, resulting from the conciliation with the Council on 16 March, which liberalises international freight railway traffic on 1 January 2006 and national traffic (including cabotage) from 1 January 2007. On Thursday Parliament adopted the report of German Christian Democrat Georg Jarzembowski on the amendment to the directive of 1991 on Community railways; - that of Belgian Liberal Dirk Sterckx on the directive on railway safety; - that of French socialist Gilles Savary on the regulation to set up a European Railway Agency; - that of French Communist Sylviane Ainardi on the amendment to directives on the inter-operability of the Trans-European railway system.
