Commission is expected to approve its communication on equal opportunities and equal treatment between men and women

Brussels, 20/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is expected to approve, on 21 April, a communication on implementation of the principle of equal opportunities and treatment between men and women with regard to employment and work. The text initially proposes updating of all the directives relating to equal opportunities, followed by harmonisation in order to incorporate new ideas arising from the European Court of Justice's well-established caselaw, it was stressed by Antonia Mochan, Spokesperson for Commissioner Stavros Dimas. The aim of this proposal is to increase legal security and clarity in the field of equal treatment between men and women, without affecting the body of law. To put it briefly, the proposal: - is presented in the form of a single text, which is a guarantee of readability and clarity; - simplifies the implementation of the principle of equal treatment between men and women for employment and work; - and improves the corresponding body of law by integrating the Court's caselaw.
