Gonzalez-Paramo's nomination is approved

Strasbourg, 20/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption by a very large majority of the report by Christa RandzioPlath (SPD), Chair of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, the European Parliament approved, on Tuesday, the nomination of José Manuel Gonzalez-Paramo as a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB), for an eight-year term of office taking effect from 1 June this year. The Spanish national will succeed his compatriot, Eugenio Domingo Solans. The nomination is now to be approved by Member State governments (EUROPE of 7 April, p.8, on the subject of the hearing by Mr Gonzalez-Paramo at the parliamentary committee). After a secret vote, the EP followed the recommendation made by its economic and monetary committee which considered Mr Gonzalez-Paramo to be well qualified for the appointment given the main requirements set out in the treaty (personal integrity, authority and professional experience recognised in the monetary and banking field). In a press release, Ms Randzio-Plath recalls that she invited the ECB to organise "in the near future" with the EP and social partner representatives a conference on evaluation of the role of the EU's central bank.
