Brussels, 20/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - A meeting to discuss key safety and security issues surrounding the "Euro 2004" football tournament this summer in Portugal will take place on 22 April in Strasbourg, with the participation of representatives of the Council of Europe, the Portuguese authorities, the UEFA and several national police forces. They will examine the preparations for "Euro 2004" including crowd safety policy inside and outside stadiums, policing, ticketing and the hosting of spectators. The press release recalls that the role of the Council of Europe in preparing this event (the third biggest sporting event in the world) arises from the European Convention on Spectator Violence and Misbehaviour at Sports Events, and in particular at football matches. The Council of Europe will be represented by Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Portuguese State Committee for Security and Safety representative Paulo Gomes, UEFA Senior Manager for Stadiums and Security Marc Timer, and the Chair of the Standing Committee of the Convention on Violence in Sport, John de Quidt.
