16/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - At a press conference on Thursday evening (see p.5) EP President Pat Cox reiterated the message he gave regarding Cyrpus at the donors' conference in Brussels - that the opportunity to find a solution for the island was a "once in a generation oppourtunity". Those who don't believe this should know that it took thirty years to get to the point and pose the question on the reunification of Cyprus he said, adding that Europe "has a solemn duty of care and solidarity" towatds Cyprus. It is a "generational" question he stressed. Quoting Jean Monnet who said that when the context changes, the problems also change, he claimed to be "deeply disappointed" about the inability of some to understand the new European realities. Mr Cox recalled that he visited Cyprus and its buffer zone after being elected EP President in 2002. He said: in one I saw an abandoned restaurant, a half empty bottle of wine on the table covered in dust - it is up to us to remove this three decade-old dust.
