THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/latvia

15/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - The EU/Latvia Joint Parliamentary Committee Bureau under the Co-chairmanship of Guntars Krasts and Alfred Gomolka, has reported positively on the work of the Parliamentary Committee (to be dissolved when Latvia joins the EU) stating that experience gained thus far will benefit all new Latvian MEPs. The Bureau, which hoped that the European Constitution would be quickly adopted to face the new challenges of enlargement, also noted that the experience of MEPs from Latvia and other Baltic States will be very useful to "build a bridge" with the EU's new neighbours in he context of the "Wider Europe" policy. The Bureau hopes that the European Parliament will be more involved in Baltic regional co-operation, with the Baltic sea becoming "virtually" an "inner water" of the EU.
