Peter Scheider condemns attitude of Greek Cypriots trying to prevent reunification of island ahead of enlargement

Strasbourg, 16/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - President of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Peter Schneider, has concerns about the result of the 24 April referendum on the reunification of Cyprus. He condemned the attitude of Greek Cypriots lobbying against the UN plan or a postponement of the referendum. This attitude is extremely disappointing, he said in a press release, adding Those who seek to prevent a solution to this crisis will carry a heavy political responsibility if it fails and it would be unacceptable that they use the situation to their advantage. A no vote or a postponement of the referendum will only serve to heighten and perpetuate the division in Cyprus. It would also deal a severe blow to the authority of the UN, boding ill for its future participation in mediating international crises asserted Mr Schneider before adding that the international community and the EU in particular must not disappoint Cypriots backing this solution, nor make them pay the price of failure.
