Brussels, 15/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday the European Commission confirmed that it had suspended its investigation into the take-over bid by US group Oracle for its fellow US rival PeopleSoft, as it did not have enough information. Tilman Lueder, one of the spokespersons for Commissioner Monti indicated that the suspension of the enquiry was decided on Wednesday and that no new deadline for its conclusion had been set (initially, the date limit was set for 11 May). The spokesperson explained that they "were lacking in appropriate information" and added that the Commission was seeking more precise information on Oracle's position on the human resources and financial management software market. Lueder said that the Commission, which had already suspended its investigation into this case in January re-opened it in March. It requested information for 6 April but had still not received a response about the deadline given to the US group on 12 April. This explains the suspension of the investigation. We also know that European and US competition authorities were afraid that an Oracle/PeopleSoft merger could damage competition on the corporate software market. The US Justice Department has also indicated that the merger would leave just two operators on the human resources and financial management software market: Oracle/PeopleSoft and the German company SAP.
