Brussels, 26/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - Australia threatened the EU with WTO proceedings for having re-introduced subsidies for pork exports. Canberra is afraid that these subsidies will cause a lowering in prices on the pork markets and subsequently reduce Australian export opportunities. In compliance with WTO rules, Australia can use retaliation measures by imposing import duties on pork from the EU if it turns out that the subsidies are unjustified. Australian agriculture minister, Warren Truss indicated on Thursday that he had expressed worries from his country about this affair to the European Commission agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler and had warned that Australia could react if subsidies were not immediately halted.
