Brussels, 06/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted on Thursday during its congress in Brussels, the European Popular Party gave its support to a future EU common defence entity, which would be expected to promote the non-proliferation of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons in view of working towards disarmament. This resolution represented by Fine Gael, also affirms that that EPP believed that the future common defence body should include a defence commitment and mutual support between all Member States but that this commitment should also be similar to Article V in the WEU and NATO treaties and include a protocol for participation agreement for countries that do not wish to have an automatic provision in this sense. The EPP is also calling on the Irish presidency to promote greater EU commitment for peacekeeping in the Balkans.
