French "white list" of 93 airlines considered exceptionally safe

Brussels, 06/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - Friday's edition of Le Figaro contained a "white list" of 93 world airlines which fulfil European security standards. This list is drawn up twice a year by the French Civil Aviation Directorate General (DGAC) for French air carriers. The companies on the list must apply the same standards in terms of staff training and aircraft maintenance as those applied on French territory. When an aircraft belonging to the French company Air France in cancelled or delayed the company is authorities by DGAC to charter a craft belonging to operators on this list. Most of the 93 companies are from Member States of the EU. No Greek airline is included. Of the ten future Member States, only one Maltese airline is included. Several airlines from non-European countries (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, United States, Australia, Japan, Morocco) are also on the list. The DGAC explains the use of the term "white list" in that it is drawn up exclusively for Air France, and there are similar lists for other French airlines. Foreign airlines not included on the list should not be considered dangerous or as defaulting on European safety standards, it should be emphasised.
