04/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - In an interview to the German weekly, Wirtschaftswochen, which comes out on Thursdays, Commissioner Pedro Solbes said that EU enlargement would complicate the task of the European Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB) due to the high interest rates in some of the accession countries (notably 7.5% in Slovenia, 5.3% in Hungary). If they are seeking to adopt the Euro, the new Member States will have to ensure that their inflation rate does not go above the 1.5% average of the three best performing Member States in the Euro zone (EUROPE yesterday p 15 on the subject of accession of future Member States to the Euro.
