THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/armenia

26/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - Laurent Leylekian, Director of the Euro-Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy, has described the draft report by Per Gahrton (Greens/EFA, Sweden) on the EU's policy with regard to the Southern Caucasus as 'biased'. The report will be adopted by the EP Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday. Leylekian said such a report risked blocking the timid attempts at Armenian-Azeri negotiations and sabotaged the prudent efforts of the OSCE's Minsk group. He said the rapporteur had only quoted Azeri refugees and had called for the withdrawal of Armenian forces from five occupied regions of Azerbaijan. He expressed surprise that a member of the Greens could support the planned oil pipeline from Baku to Tbilisi without mentioning the environmental issues or the serious attacks on minority rights that the building of the pipeline would lead to.
