Brussels, 26/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - UDF MEP Jean-Louis Bourlanges said in Brussels on Saturday that the European People's Party should field a candidate for the Presidency of the next European Commission (the President of the EPP-ED, Hans-Gert Pöttering, confident in his political grouping's future success, stresses that the choice of successor to Romano Prodi should reflect the results of the European elections in June 2004, see EUROPE of 15 January, p.6). Bourlanges was speaking at a congress of the CdH (Centre des démocrates et humanistes (Belgium) led by Joëlle Milquet). He told the Belga press agency that his preference would go to the Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker, while Joëlle Milquet expressed a preference for former Belgian prime minister and Vice-Chair of the European Convention, Jean-Luc Dehaene. Dehaene was not successful in 1994 in his attempt to become President of the European Commission, in the face of British opposition, with Jacques Santer being chosen instead).
