THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/iran

26/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - Returning from a visit to Teheran, the President of the European Parliament's Socialist group, Enrique Baron, stressed the role Iran could play in working towards peace, stability and security, and focussed on the establishment of a stable partnership between the EU and Iran. With this in mind, explained Baron in a press release, we will work towards the establishment of an inter-parliamentary delegation and the opening of a European Commission office in Teheran. Belgian Socialist Véronique de Keyser, who had accompanied Baron in Iran (and who is EP rapporteur on human rights around the world) said that the Socialist delegation had not had any qualms about addressing sensitive issues like a quarter of the candidates for the 20 February elections being removed from the lists, or the situation facing women and imprisoned students.
