Twenty workshops for euro counterfeiting are dismantled

Brussels, 23/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Police Office, Europol, announced on Thursday that twenty printshops used for counterfeiting the euro in 2003 will be dismantled by joint investigation teams from the police of the States concerned and Europol member countries. The Office makes clear that seven of these workshops were outside the euro zone borders. Europol welcomes the successful cooperation in combating counterfeiting of the single currency but considers that "additional improvements are necessary in terms of common European legislation to boost mutual investigations". Europol also points out that it has set up "joint investigation teams" with non-EU member countries which has made it possible to isolate and "partially" identify groups trafficking in forged euros.
