Brussels, 23/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of its weekly meeting next Wednesday, the European Commission will hold a policy debate on progress made and to be made to establish a legal framework relating to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The last debate on this subject was held in July 2000, a Commission spokesperson recalled. Immediately afterwards, the College is expected to take a stance on transferring the dossier of sweet corn (Bt11 maize) to the Council (see EUROPE of 11 November 2003, p.11). The Commission is then expected to approve the action plan for better use of environmental technologies, an initiative by Margot Wallström aimed at combining environmental protection and growth of competitiveness. Finally, it should make recommendations on the updated stability programmes of France, Italy, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands and on the United Kingdom's convergence programme.
