Strasbourg, 16/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by Danish national Ulla Sandbaek (EDD) on the Commission's report relating to the implementation in 2001-2002 of the EU action programme for combating AIDs, malaria and tuberculosis in developing countries, the European Parliament calls for the Union's annual contribution to the World Fund to be increased to EUR 1 billion. Parliament affirms that European aid should above all suport the internal efforts of poor countries to strengthen human and institutional resources and infrastructures and modernise their basic health systems. Parliament calls for a significant increase in Community funding for fighting these diseases in the context of the next financial perspectives (2006-2011).
