Strasbourg, 16/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - In its adoption of the report by Austrian Christian Democrat Hubert Pirker on illegal immigration, the European Parliament has approved the conclusions worded by the European Council at its meetings in Tampere, Brussels and Thessaloniki, and the legislative package presented by the European Commission (EUROPE of 7 January, p.11). It confirmed its support for the creation of a European border-guard, and took note of the Commission's proposal to create an operation Community structure to be applied in order to reinforce co-operation in the field of external border protection. Parliament declared itself against the creation of a border-control agency. It approves Council's decision to ask Member States to notify legal immigration quotas, on the basis of which a Community-level definition of a common position to negotiate re-admission agreements will be possible.
