Brussels, 07/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - Following the scandal provoked by the bankruptcy of Paramalat, Jonathan Todd, spokesman for Commissioner Frits Bolkestein that the European Commission has announced that it will be taking measures to strengthen audit monitoring, establish stricter standards in auditing and consolidating rules in economic governance. Mr Todd underlined that the most recent events will be taken into account (in the action plan) and be subject to a follow up. We want to be sure that there is a revision of the rules which date from the middle of the 1980s". He also explained that a proposal would be presented in February. The Commission also wants a single auditor to take full responsibility for all aspects of accounting in order to avoid problems of responsibility when there are difficulties. Tilman Lueder, spokesperson for Competition Commissioner Mario Monti, indicated that the Commission had taken into account of the Italian decree but that it had not yet been formally informed by the Italian authorities. Before examining this decree, Mr Lueder underlined that they would not give an opinion as they had to first of all hear the arguments (EUROPE 6 January p 8).
