THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/cyprus/turkey

07/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - According to a press release from the Turkish armed forces quoted by AFP in Ankara, information has appeared in the daily Cumhuriyet whereby the Turkish armed forces have "reservations" about a plan of the Turkish government to bring negotiations on reunification of Cyprus out of deadlock, as they do not believe it reflects the reality of the situation. This information was denied by the Turkish Foreign Minister who is currently examining a revised version of the Annan plan for Cyprus. The Turkish army confirms, on the other hand, that resuming talks on Cyprus on the basis of the UN Secretary General's Plan would be tantamount to "giving way" on a "national cause".
