Brussels, 03/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Union of Federalists (EUF), presided by MEP, Jo Leinen, made a "last call to the IGC" to: approve without substantial amendments, the draft constitutional treaty of the European Convention; reach agreement on a revision clause "including an agenda and a mandate for a new constitution", to be arranged in 2008 at the latest, with a view to finishing its constituent work and approve new improvements in the constitutional treaty, "proceed to the adoption of the treaty in December 2003 by countries that agree on the current constitutional progress and its future revision".
The EUF is also calling on the IGC to support double majority at the Council. According to the Secretary General, Bruno Boissière, further enlargement of the EU would be difficult if the method for voting is dictated by national interests and "it would be wrong of the Spanish and Polish governments to risk denying to potential future Member States the benefits of EU membership that they themselves value so much".
