JPC argues Brussels European Council must provide 'clear timetable' for end to accession negotiations

Brussels, 03/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - The joint parliamentary committee EU/Romania called on the EU Heads of State and Government, during the European Council on 12 and 13 December, to provide a 'clear timetable' for the conclusion of accession negotiations in October 2004, the signing of the Accession treaty in 2005 and accession in 2007. In its strategy paper published last 5 November, the European Commission did not specify that the negotiations with Romania and Bulgaria should be concluded in 2005. The December European Council should go beyond this Commission pronouncement and precisely detail the last stages of the negotiations in 2004, feels the joint parliamentary committee in its conclusions adopted on 28 November in Bucharest. European and Romanian parliamentarians also noted their 'concern' for the high levels of corruption in Romania denounced by the Commission in its regular report. The fight against this scourge must become an absolute priority for all Romanian society, as it risks undermining and further complicating the accession process, argues the JPC.
