Tunis, 03/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - On 2 December, the European Commission awarded Tunisia 43,224 million € in the form of non-refundable aid under the MEDA programme. This brings the total of effective payments since 1 January 2003 to 69.342 million € or 103 million TD, according to the Commission delegation to Tunis. These payments can be broken down into 19,580,000 € under the "Support for the reform of basic education" project; 12,594,000 € under "Structural adjustment facility III", and 11,050,000 € under "Support for the implementation of the Association Agreement". Discussions continue in Tunis on the funding of projects already approved and not yet implemented, such as heath insurance reform (40 million €), updating the justice system (25 million €) and the media (2.15 million €), and conditions for granting Community funding to civil society organisations under the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR). The delegation states that total MEDA funding in Tunisia represents a total commitment of 515 million €, or 762.7 million TD, in non-refundable aid.
