Euro-Mediterranean business circles ask for greater investment for better Euro-Med integration

Brussels, 03/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - During the 6th Euro-Mediterranean ministerial conference in Naples on 2 and 3 December, the European employers (UNICE) and the Union of Mediterranean Confederations of Enterprise (UMCE) together reaffirmed their commitment to the Barcelona process. In a press release, the organisations list their recommendations: 1) speed up the process of north-south and south-south trade liberalisation for goods and services, reaffirming the objective of a Euro-Mediterranean free-trade zone by 2010; 2) draw up a Euro-Mediterranean action plan to facilitate exchanges, with clear objectives; 3) implement an action plan on transport, reinforcing infrastructure capacity and providing interconnection with the EU; 4) schedule a revision of the Meda programme partially to orient this instrument towards the private sector, and the promotion of investment, and to guarantee that EIB resources go towards these same objectives; 5) look into the establishment of instruments for qualification recognition, making the mobility of the labour force easier in the Euro-Mediterranean area.
