01/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) has stated its view that the agreement between the European Parliament and the Council to extend ecopoints goes against the principle of freedom of movement within the EU and that great vigilance will be required if various Member States are not to put their national interests above those of the Community. "Discrimination between national and international traffic will continue. In fact, certain older vehicles will be barred from travelling through Austria, which would be allowed to travel within the country", said the IRU (for the result of the Council/EP conciliation, see EUROPE of 27 November, p.11).
