Brussels, 27/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of their fourth summit in New Delhi on Saturday, the Union and India are expected to sign three new cooperation agreements including on India's contribution of EUR 300 million to the satellite navigation project, Galileo. They will begin with an overview of current political and economic issues on the international and bilateral scenes. The fight against terrorism, reform of the United Nations and the relaunching of negotiations on the Doha Development Agenda at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) should dominate discussions to be conducted by the Council President, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, and the Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vjapayee. In addition to the agreement on New Delhi's participation in Galileo, the technical aspects of which have still to be negotiated, the partners are expected to agree on strengthening customs cooperation in order to facilitate bilateral trade and improve cooperation in the maritime sector, in the aim of reducing the duration and cost of transport. They are also preparing to renew their commitment to strengthen the United Nations and to reaffirm that terrorism is a collective threat which calls for a collective response. The Union, for its part, should "recognise" the effort made by India to preserve its democracy. Regional crises will also be discussed by Indian and European officials, mainly the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the situation in Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
