Condemnation of new terrorist attacks in Istanbul

Brussels, Strasbourg, 20/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Union has condemned the attacks in Istanbul on Thursday against the HSBC Bank and the British Consulate (which killed more than 25 and wounded 400, according to AP). The EU High Representative for External Policy, Javier Solana said that, "I condemn with the utmost vigour the new terrorist attacks in Istanbul that hit a country that is very close to us and, in that country, the representation of a Member State of the European Union. These are outrageous attacks aimed at spreading terror. I have expressed my sympathy and solidarity to the Turkish and British governments and extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims". These attacks only underscore the need for continued international cooperation in the multifaceted fight against terrorism. The European Union remains determined to play its part in that fight, in close cooperation with its partners, including Turkey.
