Brussels, 22/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - Reacting on Tuesday evening to the commitment taken by Teheran to sign the additional protocol to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and suspend its uranium enrichment activities (see yesterday's EUROPE, page 4), Javier Solana welcomed this move forward while calling for rapid implementation of the commitment in question. The EU High Representative for CFSP, moreover, was not of the opinion that the declaration finalised in Teheran by the Iranian authorities and German, British and French Foreign Ministers was not a success for European diplomacy. To the question of knowing whether the agreement was the result of an EU initiative, Mr Solana recalled that he had been to Iran during August. He also noted that there are three EU countries which have a certain degree of technology that the others do not have and, hence, they are the ones that have taken the fore. He added that this approach comes within the EU political framework. Mr Solana, who said he had discussed matters with Messrs Fischer, Straw and de Villepin said the situation is apparently very constructive, very positive. He said he was very pleased with the way in which relations between Iran and the EU are developing.
