Brussels/Paris, 07/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - With the failure of Cancun, negotiations on the Doha Development Agenda have seen another deadline missed, which could force the World Trade Organisation to extend discussions beyond the cut-off point of 2004, said the institution's Deputy Director General Roderick Abbott, in an interview with French daily "La Tribune" on Tuesday. "It is more likely that negotiations will continue until 2006, when the cycle should have been completed", he said, given that "the Cancun episode has already cost us three or four months. Then, in 2004, there will be the American elections, when it will be hard for Washington to compromise on such tricky issues as cotton" whilst "in Brussels, enlargement will take centre stage". The likely conclusion is that "nothing will change before 2005". And to achieve even this- "if the United States, Europe and Japan are to emerge from the Cycle with any chance of success, they will have to think about what concessions they are prepared to make", he added.
