Europeans do not want to wait another three years

Brussels, 02/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - The day after the discussion in the financial committee of the American senate- which it found "encouraging"- the Union said on Thursday that it would not accept the planned transition period of three years to abolish the fiscal advantages enjoyed by foreign sales corporations (FSC) for several decades, and which were ruled against at first instance in Geneva in summer 2000. "We have been waiting for three years, so are we prepared to give the United States another three to conform to the World Trade Organisation's ruling? The answer is no", declared Commissioner Pascal Lamy's spokesperson. She added that the retaliation mechanism would be brought into play if the law on the extra-territorial income of FSCs (ETI) was not abrogated by the end of the year. "This legislation has been declared illegal, and the only solution to this is to repeal it", she emphasised.
