Brussels, 02/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - Negotiators from the EU and Central America were expected to initial a new co-operation and political dialogue agreement, late Thursday, according to the European Commission. The agreement will formalise the political agreement set up since 1984 in the framework of the "dialogue of San José" between the EU and Central American countries. It will extend co-operation to immigration control, the fight against terrorism and economic co-operation, beyond the themes covered in the current agreement on co-operation (human rights and democracy, rural development, preventing disasters, social development and regional integration). Central American countries are hoping that trade negotiations will be announced during the newt EU/Latin American summit in Mexico in May 2004. The EU has already concluded free trade agreements with Chile and Mexico and is pursuing negotiations with Mercosur and has been opposed to this until now.
